“1 Decembrie 1918” University Alba Iulia, Romania, April 11-12, 2013
Danube Education Forum – Education and Skills for Jobs, Growth and Stability took place within the premises of the “1 Decembrie 1918” University Alba Iulia, on April 11-12, 2013, and focused on education and training as core strategic assets for growth and competitiveness, having as a background the European Commission’s strategy on rethinking education meant to increase investments in skills for better socio-economic outcomes.
Connecting universities to regional growth was one of the main subjects of the Danube Education Forum which highlighted the essential role that public authorities have to promote the active engagement of universities and other higher education institutions in regional innovation strategies for smart specialisation, in cooperation with research centres, businesses and other partners in the civil society.
Furthermore, the participants at the event touched on the issues of higher education internationalization, underlining the fact that it requires all institutions to revisit and affirm the underlying values, principles and goals of internationalization, paying a great attention to efforts in order to ensure that institutional practices and programs successfully balance academic, financial, prestige and other goals. Issues such as the mobility of teachers and students, and the recognition of qualifications, quality and excellence are key aspects to be developed in the Danube Region and were some of the main points discussed in Alba Iulia.
The forum is part of a series of preliminary events which come to prepare and support the 2nd Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region that will be organised by the European Commission and the local and regional authorities in Bucharest, on October 28-29, 2013. This second edition will lay emphasis on smart specialization as an approach to help regions recognize their true innovation potential and refocus their industrial structures towards emerging industries and international markets.
